#631 - Hard Maths Logic Question

There is a jar in which there are two types of candies – 20 blueberry and 16 strawberry. You perform the following steps:
1) You take out two candies.
2) If the two candies are of same flavor, you add a blueberry one otherwise, you add the strawberry one.

You repeat these two steps till there is just one candy remaining in the jar. Which flavored candy will be left?

Also, if you began with 100 blueberry candies and 93 strawberry candies, which flavor would have been the last one to remain?

Hard Maths Logic Question

Let us suppose that there are x blueberry candies and y strawberry candies. While removing the candies, there can be three possibilities:
1) 2 blueberry candies. In this case, you will replace one blueberry candy and so the jar will have x+1 blueberry and y-2 strawberry candies.
2) 2 strawberry candies. In this case, you will replace 1 blueberry candy and so the jar will have x-1 blueberry candies and y strawberry candies.
3) 1 blueberry and 1 strawberry. In this case, you will replace a strawberry candy and so the jar will have x-1 blueberry candies and y strawberry candies.

In this way at each step, we are either removing a blueberry candy or replacing 2 strawberry candies by 1 blueberry candy irreversibly till there is only one candy left. Thus each strawberry candy is equivalent to 2 blueberry candies.

Therefore, if there are odd number of strawberry candies, the last candy will be strawberry and if there are even number of strawberry candies, the last one will be a blueberry one.

#633 - Infosys Interview Puzzle

The king of Octopuses has servants who have six, seven or eight legs. The distinguishing characteristics of the servants is that the one with seven legs always lie but the one with either six or eight legs speak the truth always.

On a certain night, four servants meet and converse:
The black one says, 'We have 28 legs altogether.'
The green one says, 'We have 27 legs altogether.'
The yellow one says, 'We have 26 legs altogether.'
The red one says, 'We have 25 legs altogether.'

Can you identify the color of the servant who is speaking the truth?

Infosys Interview Puzzle

The green servant is telling the truth.

To prove it, let us first assume that one of them is telling the truth. It is obvious that three of the four servants are lying as they are disagreeing with each other.

Suppose if the black servant is telling the truth. In that case, the black one is having either 6 or 8 legs. And each of the other octopus is lying will then have 7 legs. In this case, the total number of legs will be 6 + 7 + 7 + 7 = 27 legs or 8 + 7 + 7 + 7 = 29 legs. But the black servant said that they have 28 legs all together. Thus he is lying.

Now follow the same logic with the remaining three servants as well assuming all of them truthful one by one. You will realize that only the Green octopus is telling the truth.

#634 - Hard Maths Cube Riddle

You are given a cube that is made with the help of 10x10x10 smaller cubes summing up to a total of 1000 smaller cubes. You are asked to take off one layer of the cubes.

How many remain now?

Hard Maths Cube Riddle

512
A layer will mean to remove from all sides of the cube. Thus it would reduce the dimension be two not one. In this way only a cube of 8x8x8 will remain. This totals to be 512.

Father and Mother goes first: 2 minutes.
Father comes back: 2+1 = 3 minutes.
Both children go to mother: 3 + 5 = 8 minutes.

#638 - Lateral Thinking Problem

Daniel walks into a movie theater. While in the movie, he suddenly smiles delightfully. About a couple of minutes later, he seems shocked. He walks out of the theater, goes to a bridge and jumps over the edge killing himself.

Why did he do it?

Lateral Thinking Problem

This puzzle can only be solved with lateral thinking, there is no logical reasoning behind it.

Daniel had been the father of two identical twins named Justice and Damien. Ironically, both of them had starkly opposite temperament. While Justice was kind and generous, Damien was quite violent and rude.

On a certain day, Justice approached his father and told him that Damien had killed a man. Daniel rushed to the crime scene with Justice and saw Damien huddled over a dead man. Rage took Daniel over and he started fighting with his son eventually killing him accidentally. When the police reached the crime scene, he arrested Daniel and he was put in prison for ten years. He received a note from Justice while he was in prison in the very first month. The note said that Justice could never forgive his father for what he did with Damien and that he will never see him again.

After moving out of the prison, Daniel came to know that Justice had become a junior film star. He also came to know that a film starring him in a minor role was running in the theater. He quickly bought the ticket to the nearest theater and went inside the hall filled with excitement. When he saw Justice on the silver screen, he could not help but smile feeling proud of his son. But soon after the camera zoomed over the back of his neck and he saw a birthmark that belonged to Damien.

He understood that in reality, Damien had killed the man and the one whom he father took as Damien was actually Justice trying to save the man. He is shocked at the revelation and struck with grief. Thus he decides to kill himself by jumping from the bridge.

#639 - Hardest Probability Problem

If you keep rolling a pair of dice together till a sum of 5 or 7 is obtained, then what is the probability that a sum of 5 comes before a sum of 7?

Hardest Probability Problem

This can be solved in a generic and complex way but let us not go into all that.

There can be four ways through which the pair of dice results in a sum of 5. There can be six ways through which the pair of dice can result in a sum of 7.

Now, we want the probability of the pair of dice resulting in a sum of 5 before a sum of 7. Thus probability = 4/(4+6) = 4/10 or 2/5.

#640 - Conditional Probabitlity Riddle Google Interview

A mathematics teacher took exam of his students. Out of the total students, 25% of the students passed both the tests included in the exam. However, only 42% were able to clear the first test.

Can you find out the percentage of those students who passes the first test and also passed the second test ?

60%

Explanation:
This type of questions call in for the application of conditional probability as the question is asking you to find out the probability that the second test was passed with the given situation that the first one was passed.

The formula for conditional probability:
P (Second/First) = P (First and Second)/ P (First)
= 0.25/0.42
=0.60
=60%
